Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition (Review) iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
Review Score:

Ever feel like you are dodging traffic as you try to cross the road? Konami/Zombie Studios’s Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition will allow you do that. Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition has endless replay value with all the options available to the player.

Playing Frogger is very intuitive. To move Frogger you swipe your finger in the direction that you want him to move. Like the arcade classic, the player must avoid obstacles like vehicles and a raging river to reach the other side. Logs and turtles float by at different speeds and timing is everything. You must save seven frogs to move on to the next stage. This sounds simple in theory, but it becomes very challenging the longer you play.

There are single and multi-player modes. In Multi-player mode, if you lose all your lives you’re out of the round. The lives reset each round for the survivors; each round resets when all players are eliminated. You must rescue the lady frogs and squish your competition.

In multi frog modes the highest score wins. Rescue lady frogs for extra points while different colored flies give different power ups; red sends your opponents back to start, blue freezes them in place, and yellow inverts their controls. Options give you the ability to adjust the music volume and sound FX.

Play Classic Mode gives you the option of 5 Themes; Castlevania, 8-bit, Contra, DDR Karaoke Revolution, and Hyper. Within Each theme are sub-themes that you can choose from. Each theme has it’s own music and feel.

These sub-themes are; Rib-Bits, Atomic Tadpole, Froschelin Von Berlin, Notorious Amphibious, Forever Polliwog, Cosmopolitan Amphibian, Funky Frog Step, Danger Frog, Don’t Stop Hoppin’, Croakin’ on the bayou, and Froggy’s Lament.

Some of the themes also include Castlevania. Classic Mode The Castlevania theme resembles the Castlevania games with flames, flying dragons, Axe knights, and skeletons with swords. The 8-bit theme looks like classic frogger; it does not include the Castlevania mode

The DDR Karaoke theme has arrows like the DDR games. The Hyper mode has a blue/orange graphics grid set-up. The scoring for classic mode is: 100 pts for hopping forward, 500 for reaching home, 500 for escorting a lady frog home, 500 for capturing a fly in home row, and 10 for each second left on the clock. You will get an extra life at 20K, 50K, 90K, and 140K points.

In twin frogs mode, you play the same as in classic mode except you control two frogs at the same time. If one frog dies, then both die. You get extra lives at 20k, 50K, 90K, and 130K points. There are the classic frogger obstacles including turtles that may dive, snakes, otters, and crocs that may bite. Watch out for croc heads on homes.

Other modes include Paint, Lady Frogger Rescue, Battle Royale, Tile Capture, Twin Frogger, and Frogger Freak Out. Each mode has its own rules. They have the same sub-themes as the Classic Modes.

Frogger is a fun game that has endless replay value as there are so many options between the themes and sub-themes. It feels just like the coin-op with more gameplay options The controls are easy and intuitive to use.

I found myself addicted to the game trying to get further then I did before. You can check out your scores in comparison with other Frogger players in Sandbox. There are 13 achievements. These include; Around the World (play every game mode at least once), The Devoted Artist (Clear all the paint patterns in Paint Mode), Nostalgia (Complete a level in Classic Mode), Lilly’s Pad (Rescue a pink frog), Castle Frog (Play Classic Mode in the Castlevania arena), among others. I am not the best Frogger player, but I was having so much fun I didn’t want to stop.

Each theme and sub-theme has its own music that has its own feel. You can pick what suits your mood for the day.

This is a must-have for any Frogger fan, so hop to it and get Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition today.
